Time Four hours
Tools ArtRage 2.5 and digital tablet

Edit Went over it again to remove some of the blurriness and add a bit more detail - some I left to help enhance the impression of being underwater.
Also, added the back - fading - hand, and fishies.
Fish closeup here [link]
:thumb95630500::thumb95630887:

Also wanted to ask opinion on perspective - spiralling down or swimming towards? I'm hoping it looks like both.

General background
=AlameaLio's prize for winning joint second place in *jennyleigh's contest .

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LEAVE ME ALONE WITH A SWIRLY TAIL AND OCEANNESS AND ARTRAGE. The hippocampi swims off and a merperson arrives.
General themes/prompts were: horses (which swam off) marine life (obvious), space and stars... the deep ocean and deep space always felt similar to me, bubbles vanish into stars, fading into the night...

About the picture
Face deliberately left without visible features because whenever I tried imagining a face, I realised that I didn't feel able to paint it in such a way as to leave the attention on the bubbles/curves - people look at the faces, they can make or break and take it out of the abstract and surreal and into the realm of character depiction, and I felt it would interfere too much with this one. I also liked the shadowy mystery the shadows gave.
Hardly any layers... I'm getting better (as they kill my computer)

The bubbles are a lot of different things - some hand drawn, some 'glitter', and the bubble streams were sort of drawn from memory from when I went diving.

Entered in ~onceuponatime08's Spindle's End Contest
I got an honourable mention!

This is really lovely! I like the bubbles and the colour scheme. :) It's too bad about the copyright thing on there, cause it makes a lot of the image hard to see. I can understand putting it on there though... what I mean is it's sad that we have to do it. :(

I love the fact that the face isn't really distinct. I think it makes it alot more realistic, since the last thing I'd expect to see from a downward spiraling creature in water.. is a clear face.
The colors are gorgeous and the shadows just make it so mysterious.
I think you are awesome and I love your gallery!

I like the hues of blue you used, and the bubbles are very well done. I also like how we can see some of the brush strokes whilst it still has definition. My only concern would be the arm; I'm not really convinced about the muscles and there isn't any hint of a bone or joint. That aside, it's impressive. Good work.

Aargh. Yes. I didn't like the arm... I never expected this one to be popular so I didn't bother redrawing it. It also has a weird perspective and shadows, and fins coming off it - there IS an elbow, but ...only I can see it :D

I suppose you can make the arm look better with a few strokes. I'm sure it will look great.

Beautiful piece I must say. I agree with you that the lack of a shown face helps me personally connect with this more in the way that I can almost imagine mine. To me it conveys the idea of drowning into a deep dark time but at the end of it, comes wisdom and joy, as represented by the dark tones at the top and the lovely sky blue at the bottom of the piece. The bubbles to really help the movement for me to flow from the top toward the bottom.

Only For Hours ?!! WoW I must say : I'm really impressed with you .
It delivers soooo much : sensation, color play, emotion and depth in only one glimpse ! The bubbles and pale are astonishing and the hidden identity of the character simply add to a perfect capture!
Great Job!
