Fish, whale or kelp tail...?

A work in progress, ideas and critiques extremely welcome.

Blacked out tail area is an indication, not the final :D

Oooh, this is going to be an awesome one. I would go for Kelp-ish tail, I think, it seems to fit the overall shape better. Or a fin that runs almost the whole length of the tail. Or both.

I think the composition of this as well as the colors you chose looks very nice. The greens and blues compliment each other nicely. The facial features and anatomy look spot-on, save for the eye area. The eye and eyebrow are too close to the bridge of the nose, making it look as if the eye isn’t set in its natural socket and the eyebrow isn’t directly above that socket. By bringing the eyebrow and the eyelid down a little and to the right, it’d look a bit more spot-on.

As for the tail, I would ultimately say whale or fish because with this kelp tail you’ve designed, it look like it would be used for more side-to-side motion (unless you significantly lengthen and widen the fin--then it would be more feasible); with the way he is positioned right now, it’s as if he’s swimming like a dolphin (undulating up and down instead of side to side like a fish), so the whale or fish tail would be better designed for him. If it came down to personal preferences, though, I would say whale.

Though this is based on personal preferences, I would suggest shortening the length of his tail because it looks much too flimsy right now (that is, if you intended for the tail to be as long as you blacked in and you use the whale or fish tailfin). It could be easily broken, for one, and secondly, I don’t think he could get a good undulating motion going—the tailfin would be significantly bigger than the tip of his tail, therefore it would be difficult for him to raise and lower it.

thank you!
I've actually fixed the eye, since :D
And about the fin... yes, you're quite right about most of that - I'm thinking about starting the fin at least a third of the way up the tail, and the blade can face any direction - so yes, a question of balance, but I think I can fix that. And it would have to be quite large...

or else, eel-like. Which I think is where the kelpish one comes in. I am leaning towards that version, but I'll have to take into account all the points you've raised :D

Hi Flynn, I'd say if you should probably shift the figure off the center towards the right, curve the tail a little more so that it forms a deeper curve, almost semicircular towards the bottom half of the composition and then add the whale fins because that'd add some mass at the left side to balance the composition. at least that's what I feel instinctively :)

Fish hook shaped? Yes... been doodling ^_^

I'm not worried about the composition too much, as I always change that :D the fishhook shape does work very well, aesthetically - it doesn't work with the flow of movement though, as she's propelled upwards which means the tail has just swept back... (but that's my problem to work out)

As for the weight/balance issue - I think I'll go with the kelp one because I like that, and I usually end up using it, but I might have to make it very large to compensate... still fiddling, thank you, you've been helpful :D

based on the rough sketches I would say kelp. It just looks better with the rest of the composition.

Kelp, it'll have the best flow and balance with the rest of the image. I do like what I see so far :)
