Fantails - native New Zealand birds, smaller than sparrow. They flit around our house a lot, chasing little insects. The background is a (poor) representation of some New Zealand bush, with a tree fern thrown in. Normally, there would be far more ferns, but I didn't like drawing them. Commonest used Maori name is Piwakawaka, also dialectal versions hiwaiwaka, tirairaka and tiwakawaka... (sixteen altogether ) Rhipidura fulginosa
These birds move so frequently and so fast that they are very hard to photograph - the few I have are quite poor. These were referenced from my own photographs and from this beautiful photograph by =carterr[link]
This is a birthday gift for my mother, I painted it over three evenings last week, and waited until now to upload it on the (very rare) chance that someone would see it and point it out to her.
Edit 10/10/09 - tada! New NZ bird picture, the Tui
ArtRage 2.5 and tablet Edit 28/06/08: title changed from Morning Sunshine. Randomly named as I was putting it up...
I really love this one. Personally though, I think the red sky takes away from the birds a bit too much... more than half the image is red/orange/yellow. Cropping it to the tail of the second bird would help balance out the image, but that's just my opinion. I reckon this would have been really nice as a landscape
Had to think about this - but I do see what you mean. Yes, it's an odd one, composition-wise - but I think it began that way, and it didn't quite work. Looking at it now, I think taking the second bird OUT entirely would have actually been the better choice, less of the 'bar running up the side' effect... (which i only came to because I was trying to imagine how to 'fix' according to yor crit ^_^ Actually, that's an interesting composition... might try and paint soemthing like that!)

Having said that though, I adore it anyway XD

The only permanent thing is change.
