The final submitted version. Update: I was one of the two runner-ups in the 18-25 section (don't know if that means 2nd or 3rd or 2nd-and-a-half)!

Thank you to EVERYONE for your comments on the in progress versions, this one got stressful! I had to submit it, so I'm sitting back and stopping. Critiques are welcome, but unlikely to be acted on, in this picture.

The theme was 'my' strengths and resiliency in my life.

The point of strength, to me, is to allow freedom. My family, my parents were strong and allowed me to be free to play, to be myself, and now I'm building up my own strengths – my books (my reading and my job), my studies (conservation and marine biology – hence all the fish fossils), my art...
I've been wanting to try painting a kauri for years, and this gave me the chance to play with some really weird perspectives. It was fun and interesting, and then of course I ran out of strengths and spent ages wrestling with the weak spots! I hate trying to draw to themes, and it was tempting to make this too abstract, but I was brave and painted some personal things. I wanted to add some of my British roots, in the form of an English oak, but that didn't fit the painting. But there's one just out of sight.

The annual NZ Youthline contest is a personal target for me:
I won it last year with

and came third the year before with
(the contest has been getting bigger and better each year, so I hope I'm keeping pace!)

Also because of the contest, I can't sell these, they go towards fundraising for the organisation. And prizes :paranoid:

The Progress

The Background

Painted in: ArtRage Studio Pro
Time: LOTS. Three weeks, maybe 15 hours? Most of this was painted with an assignment open behind it.

When i started: I was trying to convey joy. I don't see that anymore, because I'm focusing so hard on the details, but my family does, apparently.
Most annoying part: the face and head
Most fun part: the humback whale skeleton and the tree
Most interesting: getting the bark textures right on the kauri

Sorry to hear you did not win, but congratulations on being in the top three. Those darn pieces of pottery... - ah well, there is always next year. Maybe you can combine the two then, a drawing of a piece of pottery ....

sorry, did not mean to make fun of it. Hope you have a good weekend,

Anna
