Description
Original on left: Falling Sunlight
(Actually painted December 21, 2007)
New version on right: Smoke
My Kick Your Own @$$ entries
Tools: ArtRage 2.5, tablet, SAME crappy computer
Time: Four or five hours? Can't remember what the old one was. Probably 1-3 hours.
- also, shows how my idea of 'normal time to spend painting' has changed, as this was supposed to be similar effort/time
Entering:
1. All Digital Paintings, Drawings, Pixel Art, 3-Dimensional, Vectors, and Vexel images
Concept: Semi-oriental, goddess, incense, smoke and eddies. Wings of grey, or is it a cloak? Pale and shadowy...
Changes and Improvements:
- confidence. The first time I painted that picture, I wasn't sure enough to actually put the original up and cropped it a bit, so it was less abstract. I also didn't dare say exactly what I was aiming for (that the scarf should be wings, for example, and that there were leaves rising out of the smoke)
- discovered the range of colour available, and therefore find it very hard to stay with a limited colour scheme But I'd say my colour sense hasn't changed much (it was always one of the things I was most confident in)
- proportions. The ability to draw the human figure. I deliberately (as far as I could) stylised the older version to try and minimise the atrocity of my proportions, but... Frankly, pick on any part of the new version - hips, shoulders, head, chin - and it will be better drawn.
- eyes, mouth and hands. Always tricky, but FAR better now (on the hands, I drew them, they are both visible, but were hidden later by the 'necessary' flow of smoke and dress...)
- use of ArtRage and its effects, mostly what tools re available (the new version used pencil for sketching and colouring, paint, thinned paint, glitter, all three palette knives, spraypaint/airbrush tool - the old version used thick paint and the soft palette knife.)
- composition. Actually, I refer the space in the old version, but I was concentrating far more on the figure here, I guess, as that is what I had improved the most in.
- facing the other way... because she is. Also, I thoguht it was 'new vs Old' not 'old vs New' and it looked much better with both facing inwards.

This is nice to see! You really have improved on what was not a bad pic! Just goes to show what a little bravery and self critique can achieve.
